Digital Security When Crossing Borders: A Checklist

Updated: May 6, 2025

Any international trip creates a moment of vulnerability: your gadgets may be examined at checkpoints. This article is a practical guide to minimizing risks.

Three Protection Levels

Choose the appropriate level based on your situation.

Minimal. Basic hygiene for a regular tourist. Remove excess, set a strong password.

Standard. Transfer data to encrypted cloud storage, clear history, prepare device for inspection.

Maximum. Travel with a clean backup gadget, leave the main one at home or reset it to factory state.

Minimal Level

Suitable for those with no reason to expect close attention.

Strong Password Instead of Fingerprint

Biometric unlock is convenient but can be bypassed physically. Before your trip, switch to an alphanumeric code of at least eight characters.

Quick Auto-Lock

Set the screen to turn off after thirty seconds of inactivity. If the gadget is taken from your hands - it will lock automatically.

Scroll through your photo roll. Delete images that might raise questions or prolong the procedure.

Standard Level

For those who want to minimize traces of their digital life.

Transfer Data to Cloud

Everything you don’t want to show - pack into an encrypted container. Programs like VeraCrypt or Cryptomator create protected vaults that cannot be opened without a password.

Upload the container to a cloud service outside your jurisdiction. After passing control, download it back.

Clear Activity Traces

Delete cache and browsing history. Disable history saving in streaming services. Clean your downloads folder.

Review Subscriptions and Chats

Go through messengers. Delete conversations you no longer need. Check which channels and groups you’re subscribed to - unsubscribe temporarily if necessary.

Storage Encryption

Modern operating systems can encrypt the entire disk. On Apple devices, this works automatically when you set a passcode. On Windows, activate BitLocker; on Linux - LUKS.

Maximum Level

For situations where inspection is likely or its consequences are critical.

Backup Gadget

Purchase an inexpensive phone specifically for trips. Set up the minimum on it: maps, one messenger for communication, browser, travel documents.

Leave the main device at home. Or take it with you but keep it separate - they don’t have to search for it during a standard procedure.

Factory Reset

Alternative approach: before the trip, make a full backup to cloud, then wipe the gadget. Travel with a clean system. Restore data after returning.

Separate Profile

Some systems allow creating a second workspace. Keep in mind: during detailed examination, this will be discovered, which may raise additional questions.

Two-Factor Account Protection

Even if someone learns the password to your email or messenger, they won’t be able to log in without the second factor. Set up confirmation via authenticator app for all important services.

Priority list:

  • Primary email
  • Cloud storage
  • Banking apps
  • Messengers

Using VPN While Traveling

In the vast majority of countries, connection protection tools are legal. Having such an app on your gadget is normal practice.

Recommendations:

  • Don’t delete the app before the trip - an empty app list looks more suspicious
  • Disable active connection during control passage
  • Use immediately after - especially in airports and hotels where networks are unsafe

Quick Checklist

Before departure, ensure:

  • Complex password, biometrics disabled
  • Storage encrypted
  • Two-factor authentication configured
  • Sensitive files in cloud, local copies deleted
  • Browser logs cleared
  • Photo roll checked
  • Backup created

Behavior During Inspection

The main thing - stay calm. Nervousness attracts more attention than anything on your screen.

Answer standard questions about visit purpose briefly and clearly. Additional personal questions - at your discretion.

Legislation in different countries regulates the right to refuse unlocking differently. Study the rules of the specific country in advance.

Summary

Preparing gadgets for an international trip takes an hour or two. This is not paranoia but reasonable precaution. The basic principle is simple: don’t carry with you what you’re not ready to demonstrate.
